The Willits bypass is nearing completion and is expected to open to traffic in late 2016. Once that happens, the portion of Main Street from the Hwy 20 intersection to the northern city limits will no longer be owned by the State of California and will become property of the City of Willits. The portion of Main Street from the southern city limits to the Hwy 20 intersection will become State Hwy 20.
Motorists on Highway 101 will have two off-ramps from which to enter Willits – one near the southern city limits and one near the northern city limits. Highway 101 travellers will no longer drive through our downtown, but will bypass Willits on the new highway routed through Little Lake Valley.

Once the bypass opens to traffic CalTrans will begin construction on Main Street in order to bring it up to “good repair” as required by the Relinquishment Agreement between CalTrans and the City of Willits. The City and its residents are working with CalTrans to include in the construction elements chosen by Willits residents. Construction on Main Street is expected to begin sometime in early 2017 and will include a redesign of the Sherwood Road intersection, new sidewalk in front of Willits High School, and new road surfaces and sidewalks on the section of Main Street being relinquished.
